What is wishcycling — and why we keep hoping recycling will “take care of it”

Many people throw all their waste into the recycling bin, hoping it will be recycled. But environmental groups and waste-management companies increasingly warn that this habit can backfire — making recycling less efficient, more expensive, and sometimes impossible.
Wishcycling (from wish + recycling) is the persistent desire to recycle anything unwanted — even items that cannot actually be recycled.
At the heart of wishcycling is hope. People aren’t sure what really gets recycled, but they don’t want to spend time figuring it out. So they prefer to believe that if they put something in a recycling bin, it will become a new product instead of ending up in landfill (and therefore won’t harm the environment).
Modern recycling systems expanded in the 1970s in the United States as public concern about waste grew. This changed how many consumers perceived trash: waste no longer seemed purely harmful, because it could supposedly get a “second life” as a new product.
With support from governments, corporations, and environmental organisations, recycling became a mainstream practice — especially for plastics. Many plastic products carried identification codes in a triangle of arrows (numbers 1 to 7). The symbol looked like a guarantee of recyclability, but it often wasn’t. In practice, only some plastic categories are widely and economically recyclable, while others are rarely accepted or are processed only in limited conditions.
(EU note, if you’re reading this from Germany or elsewhere in the EU: the core dynamic is similar — many items look “recyclable,” but local systems and accepted materials vary. The safest rule is still: follow your municipality’s guidance, because “put it in the bin and hope” usually reduces overall recycling performance.)
From the early 2000s, Western European countries and the US exported millions of tonnes of scrap metal, paper, and plastic to China for processing. For richer countries, it was a relatively cheap way to manage waste; for China, it was a business opportunity.
In 2018, China launched the “National Sword” policy and imposed sweeping restrictions on importing many categories of foreign waste. When that outlet disappeared, waste piles grew in exporting countries, which often didn’t have enough domestic recycling capacity for the volumes and types of material they had been shipping abroad.
But people still wanted to believe their waste would be recycled — so many started putting everything into recycling containers. Around this time, waste-sector professionals began using the term wishcycling as a public education tool: to explain why “recycle everything” can actually make recycling worse.
When non-recyclable items are mixed into recycling streams, sorting becomes more expensive, equipment wears out faster, and loads can be rejected or downgraded. That’s why waste operators and environmental organisations urge people to place only accepted materials in recycling bins.
Items that typically do not belong in household recycling bins include:
• plastic film, cellophane-type wrapping, and bubble wrap
• any kind of wires and cables
• toxic or medical waste
• batteries
• diapers
• large plastic toys
• disposable cups and baking trays
• food waste
• hangers
• ceramics
• light bulbs
(Important: acceptance rules differ by city and country. Some EU regions have separate collection for batteries, e-waste, organics, packaging films, or bulky plastics — but they are usually not handled through the same “mixed recycling” bin.)
