Technologically easy, morally hard: climate action demands a systemic reorientation, before collapse

Reducing greenhouse gas emissions is, in many respects, technologically straightforward. We know how to decarbonise power; electrify transport, buildings and a good chunk of industry; and improve energy efficiency. We can reverse land use change and a good chunk of agricultural emissions by changing diets.
Many of these solutions are already more cost effective for consumers than fossil alternatives, as well as being profitable for the companies selling them. The economic levers are there too: carbon fee and dividend schemes, which – if well applied – would incentivise the switch to clean technologies while ensuring equitable outcomes.
The co-benefits are astounding: cleaner air and water; quieter cities; ultimately billions of people spared from suffering and premature death; trillions in avoided health costs; future food and water security assured; not to mention preserving what's left of the natural places we hold dear.
The barrier is not physics or engineering. It is the moral architecture of our political economy.
Climate change is often framed as a failure of individual virtue – overconsumption, apathy, denial. But this misdiagnoses the problem. Ordinary people are not the architects of the system; they are shaped by it. The deeper issue is a structural moral failure embedded in institutions that reward extraction, externalise harm, and suppress truth.
This is why climate action is technologically easy but morally hard.
The climate crisis is driven by a fusion of greed and power that has been built into the design of neoliberal economies.
Greed: profit maximisation and growth at all costs, regardless of ecological or social damage.
Power: the ability of incumbents to impose costs on others – communities, ecosystems, future generations – while protecting their own interests.
Hubris: the belief that nature can be mastered, controlled, and endlessly exploited.
Denial: not ignorance, but deliberate disinformation designed to manufacture doubt and delay action.
These are not personal vices. They are institutionalised behaviours – incentives, norms, and political structures that shape how markets operate and how governments respond.
Ordinary people are not gluttonous consumers; they are targets of advertising, nudged by defaults, constrained by infrastructure, and misled by disinformation. Politicians are not failing to enact the policies that would avert crisis because they're lazy; they are embedded in systems shaped by lobbying, donations, revolving doors, and media ecosystems that normalise delay.
The moral failure is systemic, not individual.
The economic story is often told too simplistically: fossil fuels persist because they are more profitable. But the reality is more nuanced.
Renewables are now often cheaper – even with storage and without subsidies – and long-term investor returns in clean energy can outperform fossil fuels (except when prices spike during global energy crises). Fossil fuels operate on a lock-in model: extract, burn, repeat. Users must continually buy fuel, creating recurring revenue streams. Infrastructure is centralised, reinforcing corporate and state control.
Renewables, by contrast, decentralise and democratise energy. Once installed, solar panels, batteries, and electric vehicles free households from ongoing fuel purchases. This undermines the fossil model – much like breaking free from the "printer and ink cartridge" trap. Once adoption reaches a critical mass, renewables will also insulate countries from geopolitical events that have sent fossil prices soaring in recent years.
Food systems show similar dynamics. Livestock occupy vast land areas – around 80% of agricultural land, yet provide only 17% of calories and 38% protein. In other words, 83% of calories and 62% of protein come from just 16% of agricultural land (the rest is used for biofuels and cotton). Plant-based diets are cheaper and more efficient, but meat retains cultural and aspirational value. Again, the barrier is not technology or economics – it is status, identity, and institutional inertia.
Fossil fuels are not just profitable, they are politically powerful. Their centralisation and scale align them with statecraft, geopolitics, and historical patterns of exploitation. Colonial empires were built on resource extraction; today, fossil systems still reinforce hierarchies and geopolitical leverage.
Renewables threaten this order. They decentralise energy, reduce dependency, and weaken the political economy of control. This is why fossil lobbies remain vastly more powerful and well-funded than clean energy advocates: they are defending not just profits, but a political-economic system rooted in extraction and dominance.
This fusion of greed and power is the core moral failure.
Disinformation is not an accident of social media, it is a deliberate strategy. Fossil interests have funded campaigns for decades to cast doubt on climate science, undermine trust, and delay regulation. AI and social platforms have turbocharged this dynamic, amplifying falsehoods faster than truth can catch up.
Disinformation is a moral choice made by institutions defending their interests. It is part of the structural moral failure that blocks climate action.
Societies have undergone moral reorientations before – abolition, post-war reconstruction, civil rights, environmental regulation. But these shifts rarely emerged in calm times. They followed crises, shocks, legitimacy breakdowns, if not outright collapse.
Climate change is different. It demands moral reorientation before collapse becomes undeniable, at global scale, with complex fixes. This is historically unprecedented. The challenge is not simply to deploy technology. It is to redesign the moral architecture of political economy.

Collapse is underway in many ecosystems already – declines in insects, birds, fish, mammals and other creatures, caused in various parts by habitat loss, use of pesticides, over-exploitation, pollution and lately accelerated by climate change. Is there a scenario where, despite rampant disinformation, we transition quickly enough to avoid catastrophic ecological and societal collapse?
Possibly. Decentralised renewables, electrification, and dietary shifts could scale rapidly. Institutional reforms could blunt disinformation and weaken fossil (and other corporate) capture. Cultural norms could shift toward wellbeing rather than consumption.
But history suggests moral reorientation rarely precedes crisis. The odds are stacked against us, not because the solutions are difficult, but because the systems resisting them are powerful.
Still, collapse is not binary. It can be mitigated, softened, or redirected. The question is whether enough people, institutions, and movements can tip the balance.

The most effective use of money is not to mimic disinformation tactics, but to campaign for systemic reforms that make platforms accountable and reduce governments' vulnerability to fossil influence. Europe's Digital Services Act and complementary #ClimateFactsMatter programme are starting points. A recent baby-step in Australia is a move to introduce a public register of lobbyists who have been issued security passes to Parliament House.
Climate breakdown is not just a technical or economic problem. It is a moral and political one. The challenge is unprecedented: to achieve systemic moral reorientation before collapse, at global scale, with complex fixes.
Whether we succeed depends on whether we can redesign the systems that reward institutional vice, and embed cooperation, truthfulness, and stewardship into the architecture of our societies, while there is still time.
