🗞️ Driving the news: Germany, Austria and Luxembourg have launched a $2.5 billion funding mechanism to accelerate Europe’s market for electricity-based sustainable aviation fuel (e-SAF)
• The scheme aims to bridge the price gap between what producers need to make projects bankable and what airlines and other fuel buyers are willing to pay
🔭 The context: Germany will provide up to $2.4 billion, while Austria and Luxembourg will each contribute up to $71 million
• The mechanism will use separate competitive auctions for producers and buyers, with public funding covering the resulting price gap
• Around 50 synthetic aviation fuel projects across the EU are reportedly awaiting final investment decisions, according to EASA
🌍 Why it matters for the planet: e-SAF can reduce aviation’s lifecycle emissions compared with conventional jet fuel when produced with low-carbon electricity, renewable hydrogen and sustainable carbon
• Scaling it could also stimulate investment in renewable power, hydrogen and carbon-management infrastructure
⏭️ What’s next: The programme still requires European Commission approval under EU state-aid rules
• Its effectiveness will depend on whether the auctions provide enough certainty to turn proposed projects into financed and operating production capacity
💬 One quote: The scheme is “creating long-term prospects for producers, promoting transparent price signals and helping to ensure that e-SAF will also be available in Austria,” said Austrian Mobility Minister Peter Hanke
📈 One stat: 70% — the share of aviation fuel supplied at EU airports that SAF is required to reach by 2050 under ReFuelEU Aviation
