The sustainable business conversation in the past year was shaped by a single, uncomfortable question: whether the corporate sustainability project, as built over the past two decades, could survive contact with reality. The EU's Omnibus simplification package gutted key provisions of the CSRD and CSDDD, stripping mandatory due diligence and reporting requirements from thousands of companies. In the US, ESG became a political liability. Voluntary commitments frayed as cost pressures mounted and the patience of shareholders, regulators, and the public pulled in opposite directions.

What emerged from that pressure was not consensus but a sharper set of arguments. Some on this list – Tim Mohin, Andreas Rasche, Ioannis Ioannou – pushed back against the retreat, making the case that sustainability embedded in strategy is more durable than sustainability bolted onto compliance.
